Cork flooring is an engineered hardwood product that has grown in popularity in recent years because of its comfort, modern look, hypoallergenic qualities and environmental sustainability. Cork flooring always warms and enriches a home and blends well with any décor. It’s available in a wide range of colours from its natural honey tones to green, red, chocolate and black and is available in both tiles and planks, with either glued or glues-less installation.
The Advantage of Cork Flooring
Cork is a tissue structure like a honeycomb: each cubic centimeter contains around 40 million dead cells filled with air and lined with alternating layers of cellulose and waxy substance called Suberin. As a result, roughly half of Cork material is air, which acts as a cushion and gives Cork three important characteristics for flooring: heat retention (making it ideal for basement applications), extreme elasticity and remarkable sound absorption.
Cork floors are one of the best eco friendly flooring options available today because they are incredibly environmentally sustainable. Cork is a bark harvested from Cork Oak trees, none of which are ever cut down or even damaged. Only the bark is peeled off, and it grows back completely within nine to ten years, ready to be harvested again. What’s more, the bark takes on a smoother texture with each harvest. A cork oak can live for up to 200 years, over which time its bark can be harvested up to 20 times. Not only is the bark inherently resistant to extreme temperature changes, it is resistant to over 38 species of insects, including termites, and to the development of microbes. Cork is exemplary in green flooring because the forest and surrounding habitat is kept 100% alive and undisturbed.
Precautions with Cork Flooring
Cork floors come pre-finished with an acrylic varnish, but like any flooring, it is susceptible to scratches from things like pet claws. However, because Cork is so elastic, it gives under pressure and thus allows for less abrasion than one would find with solid or engineered wood flooring
. On top of this, sound maintenance of Cork flooring eliminates any small scratches and abrasions, and urethane sealing makes it substantially more durable. It’s also important to bear in mind that ultraviolet exposure from sunlight does cause colour variations to a Cork floor. Area rugs and furniture block light exposure and thus will cause uneven colouration. To minimize this, periodically move your furniture and floor coverings and use shades on any exposed windows.
